Act of Kindness

Scene setting...

We've only been in this village for a couple of months. Unfortunately we haven't really had the opportunity to get to know many people yet. I don't tend to run out and make lots of friends very quickly, as I find it hard to meet people of like-mind (hence the blog!).

Deep down I know that humans are amazing. We are compassionate beings of infinite kindness - deep down that is ;o) Mostly, humans find it hard to show just how wonderful they are, for lots and lots of reasons that I wont go into here and that we all know. So, when I am the subject of an act of kindness, I am always overwhelmed with happiness and spend a long time wallowing in the loveliness of it all.

This...

... is a large bolt of posh willow withies. Steamed willow, white willow and buff willow.

We had a knock on the door yesterday by a lovely person from our village, who we have never met before, to say that they couldn't help noticing that I made baskets (how they noticed I have no idea!! Maybe it's the willow lying around everywhere and the volume of expletives when I'm trying to keep a basket from going wonky!!). Anyway, this lady had gone on a course and come away with this starter pack of willow and since then it had sat in a corner, not really doing very much. They would like me to have it instead.

WOW!

A mindfulness bell. A bell to remind me, no matter how small it may seem or how huge, of just how wonderful, how gloriously simple and beautifully lovely, humans can be.

  1. That is wonderful - what a wonderfully kind thing to do - sometimes it's really hard to find that spark of simple and beautifully lovely human and then other times it hits you like a ton of willow. I am looking forward to seeing your creations - Samantha

  5. How wonderful - acts of kindness are so special, especially when they're totally unexpected! Looking forward to seeing what you create with the willow.

BTW, thanks for the comment on the scarf - the spam filter had caught it for some reason but I've since liberated it! My sister liked the scarf so I'm very relieved!

  6. What a kind gesture! I hope you meet more people like that!

I love that you weave as I knit- with the appropriate number of expletives, that is. It's an art.

  8. It is an important lesson for us to encounter every once in a while, and one that is greatly appreciated. One of the amazing things in life is that the more joy and giving that we share with others, the more it comes back to us. And what a wonderful gift you got, it looks beautiful simply as a bundle of willow, it will be great to see what piece of wonderful art you create with it!

I feel like I visit all of you for a cuppa when I visit your blogs. So, I s'pose, we're a fraction of a step closer to being a village of like-minded people! Ahem... well sort of!

Mindfulness Bell is a term coined by Thich Nhat Hanh - Zen master!

  11. What a beautiful gift! Willow is my favourite tree and that bundle of withies reminds me of my childhood habit of stripping the poor willow in my g'ma's backyard of her long, lovely branches, and playing dress up with them.

Isn't it nice when humans shine through? I mostly prefer cats to people myself, but lately have been noticing a lot of bright shiny turning up in my life.

  12. My wife and I lived in the small Northern Ontario town of Powassan for ten years (pop 1200). Being big city people and used to big city rules, we began by minding our own business and respecting the privacy of others, only to find there is no such thing as privacy in such a small place.

I'm sure if your village is anything like Powassan, there is little about you that isn't already know (including your faviourite form of expletives when those baskets go wonky)!

  13. I think when we are conscious of something about our selves, and we are creative with it, then we attract like minded events and people into our lives. And then also from my expereiences, when we are unconscious about something in our lives and about our selves, then we attract opposites so that we can see the odd behaviour or issue in our selves more clearly by reflecting off of our opposites. Then when we have the aha moment, we no longer need to experience the opposites in our life. We transcend them. So I bet you attracted a like minded person in your life, a part of your life that you are gifted in.

  15. DarkleyFey, What a lovely image, dressed in willow!! Bright and shiny humans have to be among the best finds in the world, happy to hear you've got some!

Barry, Having lived mainly in villages, I know exactly what you mean! It's a weird sort of comfort isn't it? Well, to a point anyway! :o)

NaturalMoments, Life does seem to work like that doesn't it? For the past few years I've shut off from being aware of that, it's only recently I've begun to observe it again. Life is all the better for it too.
