Sunset through Hazel Leaves and Leaping Giant Frogs.

Sunset through new hazel leaves

I have a thing about Beech trees.  In spring they are one of the most beautiful sights and in the autumn they are one of the most beautiful sights.  I love the smooth grey of their trunks and the sinuous strength of their limbs stretching out to the sun.  If you look at the way a Beech tree twig grows it is asymmetrical, elegant and.. erm...  pointy.   :)

Hazel bud burst on the trunk of the tree

Once I went to Avebury at Samhain.  I got chatting about Beech trees to the head Druid of the area before the ceremony started.  He had a loathing of splintery Beech Trees and we debated heavily about whether they were native or not.  It was brilliant!!  He had a point about them being splintery, the only close encounter with a falling tree I've ever had was the huge limb of a Beech tree ripping the tree in half in Savernake Forest.  Leo and I had just passed the tree a few moments before.  It sounded like the largest thunder clap I'd ever heard.  Scary stuff.

Not quite as scary as my church and graveyard explorations during this walk...

I was getting sucked into the stories behind the gravestones.  Fantasing about the lives these people may have had.  I came across the oldest gravestones, some dating to 1615!  It was in this patch that the Entrance to the Vault was.  Strangely compelling.  I think my irrational desire to be able to lift that stone and go down the beetle covered steps into the vault is what led me to go into the Church instead.

Willow and I opened the huge heavy oak door and were hit by the damp stone and dusty wood smell that is peculiar to churches.  Willow was having none of it.  She was not going in!  I finally managed to coax her in and I closed the door.  No lights.  It was creepy but beautiful!  It's what the windows were made for.

This window was behind the altar.  Check out the masonic symbol in the very top window.

The church was full of shadowy pews, arches and churchy paraphernalia.  I was heading towards the altar when I saw the shadow of a person.  A huge person, with a perfectly defined head.  I nearly poo'd my pants.  there was an unexpected room off to the left with a huge statue of a man in it lit by the stained glass window below.

About 10 years ago I used to live in a semi converted church in Capel Curig, North Wales (only half of it had been done, all the pews were still in place and the telly sat on the lectern!).  So being able to explore a church, in the dark, with noone else being there brought back memories of that crazy, wonderful time!

Sweet Woodruff

The woods are looking spectacular.  So many new plants and signs of nightly scurrying.  I found some more moschatel (Old town clock) by the woodruff.  Pretty, pretty, pretty!

I came up with many stories during this wandering of mine.  It was great fun.  You can't help it when you come across entrances..
The Entrance

I think that the Entrance had something to do with this poor giant frog.  He obviously tried his chances and leapt out into our world at the wrong time of day.   Now he's petrified in wood forever.  Poor thing.

Before my willow went disastrously slimy I managed to make some baskets for people and here they are...
I can't use the pond anymore to soak the withies as it's too full of life (I feel awful shaking out the newts, dragonfly nymphs etc...).  So in the meantime I'm using a green wheelie bin filled with water to soak them in.  It's not really deep enough, but will have to do until I'm finished building my soaking trough!

It's a magical world we live in!

Snowy Friday

I got Leo back for attacking Willow with snowballs!

Below is a picture of the Snowdon Horseshoe in North Wales. It was taken a few days ago by my friend. He got stuck at our house on Thursday night because of the weather. I had to share it with you because it is just breathtaking! I used to live in Capel Curig and this was my view as I walked to work everyday in an outdoor shop. Well, when you could see the hills through the clouds!

My friend went back to Snowdonia on Saturday to camp at the bottom of Tryfan for a week and today he climbed Snowdon. Thankfully he texted me to let me know he was down safe just before I got really panicky. He was lucky, 6 others were rescued and one found dead on Snowdon today. I'll be doing a post about mountain safety and camping soon.

Back to the quiet gentleness of the Cotswolds...

We had the most wonderful walks on Thursday and Friday! 7 hours walking in total and it was spectacular!

Oh, but snow is wonderful for the soul.

The Cotswold village we live in is ridiculously charming.

Our garden was fun! The trailer is completely filled with snow!

The church in our village. It contains lots of very interesting gravestones. I deciphered what I though was an ancient gravestone and in fact it said... Entrance to the Crypt! Oh, I so want to explore that!

More pictures of our snowy walk.

Thursday's Snowy Walk

Leo had the day off work on Thursday as we couldn't get the car out the village. I'm not sure Willow was pleased or not! It's worth clicking on the picture above to see it bigger, just to see the peskyness on Leo's face!

Our walk was outstanding. We were the first to break the purity of the snow and it was magical.

The above picture looks like it has been made by a bird of prey landing.  You could see the little track of a mouse or something very small, coming up from the fenceline to the captured snow shadow of the bird of prey. Took us ages to work it out!

So many snowy pictures.

I have hundreds of pictures and will be posting our Friday walk tomorrow - 'oh joy' I hear you cry!

There is a Willow in the picture above somewhere.

The Cotswolds are a quiet and beautiful place. It took me a while to 'get' them. They're very quaint and agricultural. I'm used to mountain scapes. Finally, after 4 years of living here, I think I understand their calm and gentle nature.

I couldn't resist this dogwood, blazing red amongst the monotone of the snow and the oak branches.

I'm convalescing from an operation at the moment. So may not be as active online as normal. I am visiting all my favourite blogs and will be back to normal soon!

A walk in the woods and a song in my heart

I've just had a long glorious walk in the woods today with my trusty companion Willow dog.

The moon is so beautiful in the light blue sky. This moon brings with it the promise of the coming winter solstice!

It's easy to forget we are actually living on top of a hill. A very windy hill. That's a windmill in the distance to the left of the lumpy tree.

Oak.

Oak. Wonderful Oak.

The frosty mist was beautifully lit by the afternoon sun.

In this hole a badger sleeps. Away from the likes of Willow and me and our noisy smelly ways.

When I walk through the forest I practice moving silently. Willow doesn't though, so we don't achieve much, but I do it anyway. It helps me to be mindful of every step. I can take in more of my surroundings. Not just the 5 senses, but also the deeper senses that tune you in to the spirit of the forest.

I often sing to myself little songs I make up while I'm in the woods. I recorded today's song on my camera. The audio isn't perfect but I thought I'd share it with you as I've never shared my songs on here before.

Primrose. There is a time beyond winter - there really is!!

These are either snowdrops or winter crocus. I'm betting snowdrop!

So I have had a lovely day even though I have a cold!

Bye, Bye little Cotswold House

We've rented this little weavers cottage for the past few years. When we arrived a dodgy landscaping company had been in and dug the garden up and cut everything back almost to the ground! It's taken this long for the garden to come into it's own with a bit of work and now we are moving out!! Unfortunately the inside of the house hadn't been cared for at all, so we wont be missing that. It would have been ok if we could have repaired a lot of things, but we couldn't, never mind!

The view from the front door step is lovely! South facing and glorious in the summer.

Bye bye little house.
